I'm looking for a food

for my cats. I have 5 - they range in ages from just under a year to 14 years. They are all healthy, happy, at good weights (slightly overweight, but not obese)

My oldest is about 14 years old. We KNOW she has food allergies. We tried to switch her food a while back, and she just about ripped herself apart. After a round of antibiotics, she's fine. We left the food alone because it wasn't fair to her to do that again.

I noticed today that she was starting to get really pink around her eyes again....I'm hoping it's not a newly developed allergy, but I have a feeling it might be.

They all eat Purina. It's not the best - I know, but they've done well. And we did try to switch, hense the problem with the oldest gal. They have eaten a variety of foods over their lives, but have been on Purina for the past few years.

I'm looking for something with limited ingrediants, that's not TOO expensive. I just can't have her in this condition - it's not fair. We think it was a fish allergy.... as the Purina is chicken based, and whatever it was we tried to switch to was fish based (I cannot remember what it was!).

She did have issues a while back with her kidneys, and was on perscription food - but she's been fine for the past 5-some years.

any ideas? Casey, the dog, eats Blue Buffalo - and I'm very pleased with his results. I tried it with Carleigh (the yongest) when she was a kitten, but she didn't seem thrilled about it - although I cannot keep her out of the dogs food. We also tried Nutro Kitten with the last set of fosters, but I wasn't pleased with it at all. They liked it - but they were at that age where they would eat anything and be happy....

I've got pretty much everything near by - between my house and work......

I, unfortunatly, know a LOT more about dog nutrition than cat. I'm not quite sure where to start with these guys....I feed mostly dry, with some canned - but only 2 of the 5 like the canned food, otherwise I would do a canned diet.

Hi...welcome to Cat Forum.

Dry foods without fish are pretty few and far between, I have a cat with a fish allergy and it's tough to find foods for her. I've used Eagle Pack Duck & Oatmeal for the last couple years. Price wise, it's not too bad, but definitely more expensive than Purina. Another choice would be Natural Balance Duck & Green Pea or Venison & Green Pea, this is formulated as a hypoallergenic food. It's in the same price range as Eagle Pack.

FYI...the most significant allergens for cats are corn, wheat, soy, fish & chicken.

right - I don't mind spending more, as they wont need to eat as much....

I hadn't thought about duck formulas... thanks!

I'm pretty sure its a fish allergy.... Purina has everything else in it - so I think we're ok there...I'd rather do a grain free - but that's probably too pricey right now with 5 mouths to feed.

I think the Blue contains Salmon Meal as well as the Turkey. If it doesn't work out because of the fish, here are some fish free dry foods:
The ones doodlebug mentioned and also
California Natural Chicken and Brown rice
Before Grain Chicken (contains no fish but DOES have salmon oil)
Felidae Chicken Meal and Rice Formula (their other formulas contain fish)
Fromm (their dry chicken and duck formulas DO have salmon oil)

Do you know if your kitty with the fish allergy does ok with fish oil? A lot of the hypo-allergenic foods contain fish oils because the omegas are good for cats with allergies. Kaley, my cat with severe food allergies and digestive problems doesn't seem to be allergic to the oils even though she does to fish. Kaley is so bad she has gone through all the available novel protein sources and nothing will work for her. The only protein source she doesn't appear to be allergic to is venison but it gives her horrible stomach problems. She is back on duck for now since it is the only protein her stomach can handle anymore but she's allergic to it.

we thought it was fish... but I read a bag of purina yesterday and it says 'fish meal' - which is what the BB has. We never did the full testing with her - just stopped giving what we were, and she's been fine - until now. I'm starting to wonder if MAYBE it's a seasonal thing, not food - I'm going to have to pull her file and look at the dates.

I don't think I've seen the Fromm around here, but then again - I've not really looked for it. I probably would not use Feliade - with all the recent changes to the Caniade ingrediants...

I would love to do Orijen, but that's out of my budget with five cats.

Have you tried going grain free with your baby? Maybe that would help...

Yes, the " hypoallergenic" foods she has been on do not contain grains. She has multiple specialist vets and we are running out of conservative options for her. All that is left are nasty immune system suppressing medications to try.

I really hope you find something that works for your kitty. It's horrible seeing them so miserable and itchy.
